A holistic approach to women's hormonal balance

Updated: Jul 20

Holistic hormonal health blog

When I was diagnosed with endometriosis and hyperthyroidism, my GP didn't make any potential links between endo and my thyroid issues...

When I was later diagnosed with Graves' Disease, my endocrinologist didn't seem bothered when I mentioned my endometriosis diagnosis to her either.

I was also being investigated for a blood disorder and so seeing many different doctors for all these different things.

None of them seemed to speak to the other-

They all worked within their specialisms and didn't look at my health as a whole and/or take any action when I suggested that my whole body may be out of balance (and not just my thyroid or reproductive area).

Conventional (allopathic) medicine is notorious for taking a 'reductionist' approach to our health.

  • It focuses on diagnosing symptoms of illnesses and then treating said symptoms (with drugs & surgery) rather than on identifying underlying causes of illnesses and how we can support our body's natural ability to create an environment of balance ('homeostasis') thereby reducing the likelihood of the same and/or similar illnesses from recurring.

  • It also fails to recognise that when we are experiencing illness, there may be many aspects contributing to our state of dis-ease: how we sleep, our career satisfaction, our financial health, our home environment, our relationships, social life, spirituality, and overall sense of joy... in addition to the more commonly talked-about factors such as exercise and nutrition.

We've all heard repeatedly that the causes (and cures) of conditions such as endometriosis, fibroids, and autoimmune conditions are not currently known.

I believe this is still the case despite decades of research because conventional medicine is again adopting a reductionist approach- they are searching for a cause i.e. one factor that explains it all- whereas we know that health is holistic. Many factors contribute to both wellness and dis-ease, not just one standalone factor.

This is why I've started talking about my own wellness journey online-

  • I've been forced to do the research that conventional medicine does not.

  • I've had to adopt a mindset (an open-mindset) that most conventional medical practitioners fail to adopt.

  • I'm learning about everything to do with women's health and hormones, so that I can support my body back into balance and help other women with hormonal health conditions do the same.
